The Characters
"Joe" - The Man With No Name
Clint Eastwood
plays the lead role of the "man with no name", the trademark poncho
and cigarillo make him an instantly recognisble character.
Originally however Eastwood did not figure in Leone's plans for the character,
and was only asked when Henry Fonda, James Coburn & Charles Bronson turned
down the part.
In this first film of the trilogy he appears in the first few scenes walking
into a ghost town. He is almost instantly ambushed by a group of outlaws who
shoot at his horse. Joe ends up at a bar where he decides upon his plan
to turn the rivals against each other.
Ramon Rojo - Gian Maria Volante
Gian Maria Volante(AKA Johny
Wells) play`s the archvillan of the piece, perhaps the only character in the
film capable of matching Eastwood`s, his chosen weapon a Winchester rifle. Ramon
does not appear in the film until the scene where the Rojo`s attack the American
convoy, where he mercilessly kills all the soldiers who attempt to escape.
The Rojo's
The Rojo's are one of the two rival families who appear in
the film, they are led by Ramon ( Volante) and his two brothers Esteban and
Benito. At the time when the film is set the Rojo's suggest a truce to the other
family, the Baxter's becuse of the approaching American convoy.
The Baxter's
The Baxter's are the
other family involved in the feud, the leader of the group is the wife\mother
named Consuela, the other members of the family are the husband John and the
son Antonio. The family are all eventually killed by Ramon and his brothers,
when they believe the Baxter`s are providing "Joe" with a hiding place.
Silvanito
The character of Silvanito
is played by Jose Calvo, in the film he plays the owner of the bar where "Joe"
rests after being ambushed. In the film he is the only ally of Eastwood`s character
and constantly tries to warn him that his plan will fail.
